Abstract

The efficacy of ten plant products, viz. seed powder of neem, honge, shikai, soapnut, custard apple and black pepper; rhizome powder of turmeric and sweetflag; leaf powder of tulsi and eucalyptus was evaluated each at 0.5 g, 1.5 g and 2.5 g per 50 g of seeds as pre-storage treatment against beetle, Callosobruchus chinesis (Linn.) (Bruchidae : Coleoptera) on redgram. Among the plant products, the sweetflag applied at 0.5 g, 1.5 g and 2.5 g offered maximum protection against all the three generations of pulse beetle, C. chinensis which was closely followed by custard apple, black pepper, turmeric and neem powder at higher dosage level, but resulted in moderate protection at lower dosage levels. In contrast, tulsi at all dosage levels recorded minimum protection against all the three generations of the bettle pest and was on par with untreated check which recorded maximum fecundity, adult emergence and grain weight loss
