Abstract

Field experiments were conducted for two years (1987 and 1989) on vertic-inceptisols at UAS Agricultural Complex, Bheemarayanagudi (Karnataka) to find out the feasibility and adaptability of intercropping system of pearl millet and pigeonpea in different row proportions and plant densities. The studies revealed that the total production per ha of land was more in intercropping system compared to that of sole crops but the grain yield of the respective crops in intercropping reduced to a maximum extent of 22.94 and 53.83 per cent in pearl millet and pigeonpea respectively, and the reduction in yield was more with adoption of narrower row proportions. Though the land equivalent ratio was higher (1.41) with the intercropping system of pearl millet + pigeonpea in row proportion of 4 : 2, the gross monetary returns were lower compared to that of sole pigeonpea.
