Use of Growth Regulators to Manipulate Alternate Bearing Rhythm in Mango (Mangifera indica L.)

H. Ravishankar, U.G. Nalawadi, N.C. Hulmani

Abstract

Field trials were conducted to assess the efficacy of some growth regulators in manipulating alternate bearing rhythm in mango Cv. Alphonso. Application of seven whole tree sprays of 100 ppm TIBA resulted in maximum induction of flowering of fruited shoots by-passing the vegetative growth during expected 'off year. The maximum induction of flowering on new vegetative growth that developed subsequently on fruited shoots was promoted by application of seven sprays of CCC 500 and 1000 ppm. Maximum total flowering was obtained with 500 ppm CCC. The promotive effects of these growth regulators on flower induction was found to be associated with suppression of vegetative growth. Application of growth regulators resulted in production of moderate crops even during expected 'off years thereby highlighting the possibility of smoothening alternate bearing rhythm in Alphonso mango
