Production and Effect of Toxic Metabolites of Bipolaris sorokiniana (Sacc.) Shoem - a Causal agent of Leaf Blight of Triticale

T. Raghuchander, Srikant Kulkarni, R.K. Hegde

Abstract

The fungus Bipoloris sorokiniana produced maximum toxic metabolite at the end of twelth day after inoculation in Richards' medium. The toxic metabolite was thermostable and non host specific. The toxic metabolite produced wilting and chlorisis symptoms on tomato, marigold, chilli, triticale, sorghum and maize cuttings and the time taken to produce these symptoms varied with different species. Among different liquid media, potato dextrose broth supported maximum toxic metabolite production. The toxin had an inhibitory effect on germination of the same fungus and also on triticale seeds.
