Biology of Mango Leafhoppers (Homoptera: Cicadel lidae)in Dharwad Region of Karnataka

Abstract


Studee on the life history of mango leafhoppers viz.rAmrHodusatkineoni (Leth.), kMoecopu* niveosparsus (Lelh.) and /. ctypealis (Letii.) were carried out during 1975-76 at Dharwad region of Karnataka. After an incubation period of five to six days, nymphs passed through four instars. First instar occupied two to three days in the three species, second instar for twee to four, two to twee and twee to four days with A attonsow; /. rweosparsuemdi dypealis, respectively, third instar occupied two to ttiree days in the former two species and twee to four days in the latter and fourth instar lasted for three to four days in the twee species. Adult longevity ranged from four to eight, four to seven and three to six days in the above species, respectively. Total life cycle ranged from 10 to 28, IB to 26 and 10 to 27 days, respectively. A afflmonimA /. fweoepammcoukibe bred on tender leaves during off-season and on iniorescene during blooming while /. cfypealm only during blooming on flower panicles. Rearing of A atkinsoniand /. tweoapanuB in the laboratory was possible when the mating pairs were collected from field and released on tender leaves of tie potted and caged mango seedlings. Such an attempt torearLcfypealk on caged plants did not succeed
