Abstract

The study conducted to know the characteristics of extension agents involved in educating farmers as perceived by farmers revealed that majority of the agents are male, (62.5 and 81.2) married (87.5 and 78.6) percent, respectively for Northwest Province of Cameroon (NWPC) and Southwest Nigeria (SWN) with many less than 50 years of age in NWPC, and majority above 50 years of age in SWN. The percentage of farmers with non-formal education predominates in the two study areas. Farm visit is the most prominent extension methods used and highly preferred among the respondents. In NWPC, being knowledgeable in farming was rated as the most important extension agents characteristics that would enhance learning (87.5% )while in SWN, majority of the farmers considered same language with agent as the most critical. Chi-square analysis of farmers' personal characteristics and their perception of the agents' characteristics as learning enhancement factors reveal that in NWPC, three of the five variables only marital status and family size were not significant (X2 = 3.84, P > 0.05 and X2 = 4.91, P > 0.05 respectively). However in SWN, all the variables recorded significant relationships. The study concludes that extension mangers and policy makers should also pay considerable attention in addressing these issues that will enhance the acceptability of agents among farmers for the overall effectiveness of the desired impact of extension services.
