Abstract

Genotypic correlation coefficient and path coefficient analysis of yield components in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) were worked out in 10 x 10 diallel cross combinations including reciprocals. Orain yield was found to be significantly and positively associated with pods/plant, 100 grain waight, pod clusters/plant, pod length, seeds/pod* days to SO percent flowering, pod weight/plant, 100 grain volume and plant height, while it was negatively associated with pods/cluster. The positive correlations observed between grain yield and podi/plant, 100 grain weight, pod clusters/plant, pod length and seeds/pod were quite high indicating that grain yield is largely a function of these five attributes. Path coefficient analysis indicated that pods/plant, 100 grain weight and seeds/pod had maximum positive direct effect on grain yield, while primary branches/plant and pod length had negative direct effect on grain yield. The contribution of residual factor accounted for the characters not studied was negligible.
