Mass Inoculum Production of Cercospora sorghi and Comparison of Screening Techniques to Identify Sorghums Resistant to Grey Leaf Spot

L.G. Dinesh, K.H. Anahosur

Abstract

Cercospora sorghi causes premature drying of foliage reducing fodder and grain yields in-sorghum. Among different substrates tested, groundnut shells supplemented with 3% sucrose or dextrose was the best medium for maximum inoculum production. Among.different inoculation techniques, groundnut shells covered with the inoculum dropped in the whore, of 45 day old plants induced maximum disease (64.66 to 86.45 PDI). Screening of 220 germplasm lines, by this inoculation technique, revealed that 12 genotypes were highly resistant and 92 were resistant and majority of the resistant genotypes belonged to tan plant colour.
