M.G. Olujide, S.O. Adeogun

Abstract

The study conducted to assess the farm hygiene and maintenance practices of cocoa farmers in Ondo State of Nigeria. revealed that there was no significant relationship between the age, marital status, years of farming experience and gender. Only the educational status and farmers' attitude towards the use of cultural methods show significant relationship with the farm hygiene and maintenance practices. It was also shown that majority (93%) used chemicals frequently as against cultural methods to ensure farm hygiene and maintenance on their farms. Few farmers frequently carry out cultural activities such as pruning, removal of diseased pods and mistletoes, application of organic fertilizers and breaking of pods outside the cocoa farms while some of them combined cultural with chemical to control pests and diseases both on plantation. Meanwhile, lack of credit facilities, weeds, pest, diseases and parasites and marketing were constraints limiting farm production .The study recommends that CRIN, Ministry of Agriculture and other relevant non governmental organisations should organise sensitization programme / training to educate farmers on the need to de-emphasize the use of chemical and incorporate the use of cultural methods to improve on farm hygiene and maintenance practices.
