Abstract

Considering the presence of high variability in F2 generation of safflower (Cartharms iinctoxius L-K selection was practiced for high seed yield in two crosses involving Indian X Indian parents and three crosses in voting Indian X exotic parents. Expected   response to selection was estimated and compared with the actual response obtained in F4 generation. Due to selection exercised in all the five crosses in F3 population, the expected grain for seed yield were actually realised to a consiberable extent in F4 generation. Realised beritability generation. Realised heritability values were comparable to the broad sense heritability values observed in F4.   Expected correlated response for almost all the characters were in agreement with the realized correlated response in F4 generations.
