Knowledge and life style factors of hypertensive subjects

Abstract


The present investigation was undertaken to know the diet and lifestyle factors of 100 hypertensive subjects. A pretested structured questionnaire was used to collect information about diet and lifestyle factors. Blood pressure was assessed using sphygmomanometer. The onset of hypertension was higher in subjects above 46 years of age and half the subjects had no family history of hypertension. About 46 per cent of hypertensives restricted and 20 per cent avoided certain foods. The pickle, papads, chutneys, fried foods, bakery products, salted snacks, fats and oils, flesh foods, sweets and sweet foods were restricted. The vices practiced by men (6.00 %) were smoking, drinking alcohol and tobacco chewing. Exercise in the form of walking was practiced by 63 per cent and yoga by 18 per cent of subjects. Majority of subjects belonged to mild hypertension category (61.00 %) followed by pre hypertension (12.00 %), one fifth were moderate and five per cent had severe hypertension. Half the hypertensives were unaware about the foods to be restricted, about 36 per cent did not do any form of exercise and one fourth of them were in moderate and high blood pressure category and more than half the subjects had low knowledge level about the disorder. So there was need to create awareness and impart nutrition education to improve the knowledge for the management of hypertension.
