Knowledge of students regarding Information and Communication Technology tools

Abstract


Information technology has been geared up by the advent of effective technology innovations. The new information technology tools and techniques can play a great role to improve communication. Information and Communication Technology, with its beneficial characteristics has improved students efficiency by providing them the fastest, accurate, reliable and versatile operations. Hence the study was conducted in the year 2009 to elicit the awareness and knowledge of ICT tools by the post graduate students of University of Agricultural Sciences and Karnatak University in Dharwad district of Karnataka state. In case of source of awareness, students of both Universities had awareness from friends or relatives (64.13%) followed by print media and TV (38.04%) and radio (16.30%). Majority of them were aware about Internet and MS Word (94.56%) followed by MS Power point (91.30%) and MS Excel (89.13%). The findings showed that 47.82 per cent of students had high knowledge level. The source of knowledge of students of University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad about Internet was through cyber cafe (30.43%), MS Word through friends or colleagues (63.04%), MS Excel (43.47%) through teaching and Web based search engines (30.43%). With respect to students of Karnatak University, Dharwad, majority of them got knowledge regarding Internet through friends (41.30%), MS Word through teaching (36.95%) and MS Excel from training (23.91%).
