Determinants of knowledge level of grampanchayat members about improved agriculture in Konkan region of Maharashtra

Abstract


Panchayat Raj is the backbone of Indian democracy. Grampanchayat is the lower level of the three tier system of the Panchayat Raj. The study was conducted in all the Panchayat Samities of Ratnagiri district. Total 45 Grampanchayats were selected and 315 members were contacted as respondents for the study. It was observed that 69.84 per cent of respondents had medium level knowledge. Nearly, one half (44.13%) members belonged to the young category of the age ranges between 18 to 35 years, were having education upto high school level (42.86%). More than half of the respondents (56.51%) belonged to backward class with farming alone was the major occupation of 55.24 per cent members with marginal land holding (57.14%). Nearly half of the respondents (46.98% and 49.84%) had medium family annual income and high social participation respectively. One fifth (20.95%) respondents were the members of the co-operative society and 85.00 per cent of them participated regularly. Majority (85.54%) of the Grampanchayat members viewed television for general programs. The variables namely age, education, position, land holding, social participation, mass media exposure, leadership ability, self confidence and extension participation showed significant relationship with the knowledge level of the respondents. It is clearly indicated that 43.67 per cent variation in knowledge lelvel of the espondents was explained by all the variables put together.
