Effect of polymers on moisture retention and soil water holding capacity

Abstract


In arid and semi-arid regions, efficient utilization of available water necessitates the adaptation of appropriate water management practices. One such approach is through soil conditioners. Soil conditioners have been reported to be effective tools in increasing water holding capacity, reducing infiltration rate and cumulative evaporation and improving water conservation of sandy soils. In view of the haracteristics of the hydro gel polymers and peculiar problems of rainfed areas, laboratory studies were carried out to observe the absorption of water by six polymers (P1, P2, P3, P4, P5 and P6) to investigate the effect of its application on water absorption rate and soil moisture holding capacity of loamy sand soil. Maximum rate of water absorption of polymers (P1, P2, P3, P4, P5 and P6) were (169.3, 114, 181.1, 154.2, 311.5and 155.8 times their weight respectively). Soil water holding capacity was carried out with 5 treatments i.e 0, 0.25, 0.75, 1.25 and 1.75 per cent polymer application by weight. The application of polymer to the soil helped in retaining more moisture in the soil, increased water holding capacity of polymer and decreased infiltration rate soil. The soil water holding capacity of polymer P5 which showed more water holding capacity at 3 bar pressure recorded as 16, 19.8, 28.6, 32.9 and 41.8 per cent and at 15 bar pressure it was 5.4, 6.7, 8.3, 13.2 and 24 at 0, 0.25, 0.75, 1.25 and 1.75 per cent concentration.
