Abstract

The present study was conducted to predict the accuracy of parturition date in 107 bitches. Bitches were examined for vaginal cornification starting on 3rd to 5th day of proestrus and subsequently every other day until a vaginal cornification of a minimum of 90 percent was recorded. Blood samples were then obtained for the estimation of serum P4 (progesterone) concentration. Bitches were recommended to be mated on the basis of a distinct rise in preovulatory serum P4 concentration. Serum P4 concentrations less than 1 ng/ml were considered as basal levels and the serum P4 concentrations in all 107 bitches was at basal levels at the time of their inclusion for the present study. The preovulatory serum P4 concentrations averaged 3.01±0.03 ng /ml and ranged between 2.02 to 3.95 ng/ml .Parturition date in these animals was predicted as 65days from the initial rise in serum preovulatory progesterone concentration and the accuracy of prediction of parturition date to within ±2 days was 87.85 percent
