Performance and financial management of coir industries in Karnataka

Abstract


It is an important sector as far as economy of the country is concerned. Most of the coir workers are coming from socially and economically backward classes. The industry in India provides direct employment to more than 6.4 lakh workers, majority of female. Four co-operatives, four private coir units, four wholesalers, four commission agents, four traders and four retailers were randomly selected in the year 2010-11. The total capital investment was higher in co-operative coir units than in the private coir units. The proportion of investment on land in the total investment was found to be highest in Channarayapatna co-operative unit (Rs.17.00 lakh), while in Private coir units it was ` 18.26 lakh. The manpower requirement was higher in co-operative coir units as compared to private coir units. The net present value in co-operative coir units was higher than the private coir units.
