Overcoming the hard seededness in Stylosanthes guianensis cv. Cook

S.R. Kavita, Vinod Kumar .

Abstract

A laboratory experiment was conducted to investigate an effective method to overcome hard seededness and to know the storability behaviour of Stylosanthes guianensis seeds at the Department of Seed Science and Technology, UAS Dharwad. The seed samples were subjected to different physical (mechanical scarification, hot water, smoke treatment, hot air oven) and chemical treatments (sulphuric acid, sodium hydroxide, polyethylene glycol-6000 and ethrel solutions). Then the seeds were packed in cloth bag along with untreated seed samples (Control) and stored under ambient conditions for a period of 11 months. The results revealed that treating the seeds with conc. H2SO4 for 2 min maintained the higher germination upto 11 months of storage (80.0%) followed by Sodium hydroxide solution @ 20% for 15 min (78.3%). Further, the seeds showing maximum germination (in T3 and T4 ) also recorded the increased vigour index with the reduction of hard seed percentage from 43.0 to 0.0 per cent and 46.3 to 8.0 per cent, respectively. Seeds which were treated with hot water showed maximum death compared to other treatments.
