Abstract

Sprouted rhizome buds were collected from the field and surface sterilized. The dissected rhizome bud explants of turmeric were cultured in MS medium supplemented with BAP 3 mg/l + NAA 0.5 mg/l and subjected for different doses of gamma irradiation (i.e. 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 Gy). The best result towards development of multiple shoots and number of leaves from irradiated explants was obtained in 5 Gy (4.15 and 10.75) treated explants at 60 days after inoculation respectively. Chlorophyll mutations observed were viridis type with limited number of xantho. Increasing doses of gamma irradiation increased adverse effect on growth of shoot clumps.
