Abstract

An investigation to study the effect of poor quality groundwater on the yield of maize and soil chemical properties was conducted at Nandagaon village of Mudhol taluk of Bagalkot district during kharif 2003-04 and 2004-05 with sub-surface drainage as main plots and amendments as sub-plots. The highest total drymatter yield at all the stages of crop growth and grain yield (66.09 q/ha), test weight (31.52 g) and number of grains per cob (629.89) were recorded in sub-surface drainage compared to no drainage plots. The soil chemical parameters such as pH, water soluble Na+, Ca++ and Mg++ and sodium adsorption ratio were reduced in sub-surface drainage plots than
no drainage plots.
