S.H. Anilkumar, J.S. Sonnad

Abstract

Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajana), is one of the major pulse crops of tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Hence, the present study was planned to analyze the behavioural response of tur industry during WTO era in Karnataka. Seven taluks of Gulbarga district of Karnataka state were selected by using a purposive sampling technique based on the ranking of area, production and productivity of tur. The selected tur processors for the behavioural response analysis were contacted in person and data were collected with the help of a pre-tested interview schedule. Secondary data were collected from the annual reports of FAO, Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Govt. of Karnataka and Tur Board of Karnataka. In 2000 the Indian Government introduced facilities like subsidies on agricultural inputs, irrigation, good minimum support price, promotion of usage of high yielding varieties (HYV) etc. The awareness of tur processors about the policy and institutional instruments was studied by administering a questionnaire. The modern tur processors showed higher awareness towards the policy instruments compared to the traditional tur processors. The attitude of the tur processors was studied by administering the processors schedule (which contained 11 statements about WTO era) to ten traditional tur processors and ten modern tur processors.  The attitude of the traditional tur mill processors was unfavourable and the attitude of the modern tur mill processors was favourable.
