Abstract

A purposive sample of 60 educable and trainable mentally challenged children (30 males and 30 females) aged between 6-15 years attending special schools in Dharwad-Hubli cities of Karnataka were studied for the emotional problem behaviours. The emotional problem behaviour scale by Prout and Strohmer (1991) was administered to teachers. The results revealed that the mean scores differed significantly by age, gender, and degree of mental retardation. The problem behaviours were found to be more among 10-15 years age group, and the girls were found to have more of internalizing behaviour and boys more of externalizing behaviour. The trainable mentally retarded had significantly more emotional problem behaviours than the educable mentally retarded children. Parental intervention is needed to educate and develop skills in managing emotional problems among these children.
