Studies on impact of distance education about food on rural women

Abstract


Distance education is the teaching-learning process in which students are separated from the teacher by a physical distance that is often bridged by a modern communication media. Study was conducted to know the impact of distance education on rural women with the objective to assess the knowledge of selected rural school dropout girls and women about food at pre and post stage of the distance education. The sample consisted of 120 respondents who were selected from Harobelawadi, Uppinbetageri, Mansur and Garag villages of Dharwad taluk. After the education, results showed that about 97 per cent of the respondents gave correct answer about types of food followed by better cooking methods (81.67%), balanced diet (80%) and importance of nutrients (61.66%). The knowledge of food showed cent per cent increase about cereals, pulses and food for growth. Majority (71.66%) of the respondents answered with respect to nutrients present in the food after the education. More than 90 per cent of the respondents were able to answer about nutritious food, grains required in daily diet and importance of balanced diet. Similarly, majority of the respondents answered rightly about the fermented foods (90.84%), cooking of vegetables (96.66%) and cutting of vegetables (80%). The distance education on food by use of booklet had good impact on knowledge scores of the respondents.
