Genetic studies on drought tolerant indices in maize

R.M. Kachapur, M.C. Wali, S.S. Hallikeri

Abstract

Thirteen hybrids of maize were evaluated in replicated trial under irrigated and moisture stress situation and different drought tolerant indices were used to know the genetics and correlation and finally to identify the most useful drought indices for making selection. The analysis of variance revealed the existence of genetic variation for these indices and genetic coefficient of variation, heritability and genetic advance as per cent of mean indicated that maximum genetic improvement for drought tolerance can be achieved by using modified stress tolerance indices. Similarly, the genetic correlation between different drought indices suggested that Geometric mean productivity (GMP), Stress tolerance index (STI) together with modified stress tolerance indices (K1STI and K2STI) should be used in identifying the drought tolerant genotypes.
