Public and private investment into agricultural education

Abstract


The present study aims to estimate the flow of funds into university through public and private investment and to estimate the cost of producing a graduate (B.Sc. degree holder), postgraduate (M.Sc. degree holder) and a doctorate (Ph.D. degree holder) in agriculture from the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad as one case. The results reveal that, of all the sources, State Government provided the highest amount of funds to the University which accounted for about 55.97 per cent, followed by receipts from other sources (17.26%) which include the funds received from the Government of India and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) through its various schemes/projects. The largest component of expenditure was on teaching which accounted for about 17.23 per cent, followed by administration (14.83%). The student of B.Sc. degree incurred a cost of ` 1,81,159 for the entire period of four years, a M.Sc. student ` 1,33,154 for two years, and a Ph.D. student spent ` 1,60,456 in three years. Of this total expenditure, the highest share was appropriated by the mess bill, room rent, etc., followed by college fees and other items. Only few students had received the scholarship for the entire programme and students from the rural background had availed the education loan
