Knowledge level of recommended cultivation practices of blackgram growers in North Eastern Karnataka

Abstract


The study was conducted in Bidar and Kalaburagi districts of North Eastern Karnataka during the year 2014-15 to know the knowledge level of recommended cultivation practices of blackgram growers. One taluka was selected from each district and three villages from each taluka were selected based on highest area. From each village, 20 blackgram growers were selected randomly making a total sample size of 120. The ex post-facto research design was used for the study. The results of the study revealed that, more than half (50.83%) of the respondents belonged to medium level of knowledge category about recommended cultivation practices of blackgram followed by high (27.50%) and low (21.67%) level of knowledge categories. Cent per cent of the respondents had full knowledge with respect to sowing time, hand weeding, time of application of chemical fertilizers (100%) followed by varieties, intercropping (97.50%), time of application of FYM (92.50%), intercultivation (77.50%) and seed rate (75.83%). However, the recommended cultivation practices like pod borer management, FYM quantity, mosaic disease management, powdery mildew, leaf spot, agromicid fly, aphid management and chemical fertilizer quantity had partial knowledge by the respondents ranging from 80.00 to 51.67 per cent. Some of respondents had no knowledge about recommended cultivation practices of blackgram like herbicide application and its time of application (80.83%), seed treatment dosage (40.00%) and seed treatment (39.17%). Hence, it is concluded that, the extent of knowledge which was 50.83 per cent, seems to be medium level of knowledge about blackgram recommended cultivation practices. Hence, there is need of special attention by providing training about blackgram cultivation practices to the farmers so that their knowledge could be increased and the adoption of technology would ultimately be enhanced
