Nutritional status and lifestyle factors of cardiovascular subjects

Abstract


The present investigation was carried out to assess the nutritional status and lifestyle pattern of 150 heart patients. The subjects were selected by purposive random sampling method from hospitals of Hubballi and Dharwad cities. A self structured questionnaire was developed to elicit the information about disorder on various aspects including general information, anthropometric parameters, lifestyle pattern and frequency of food consumptions. The results revealed that about 44 per cent of subjects belonged to obese grade - I category followed by over weight (21.33%), Ideal BMI (20.67%), obese grade - II (10.67%) and very few subjects belonged to underweight (3.33%) category. Among females majority were abdominally obese (83.33%) followed by normal category (16.67%). About 45.33 per cent of CVD patients had high BMI and normal WHR, followed by normal BMI and high WHR (17.33%) and very few had either low BMI and high WHR or normal BMI and high WHR (3.33%). About 42.67 per cent of subjects had habit of smoking followed by drinking alcohol (33.33%) and tobacco chewing (2.67%). Majority (87.33%) of subjects did not do any kind of exercise. The nutrient adequacy of protein, calcium, iron, zinc, β-carotene, riboflavin, pyridoxine, ascorbic acid, folic acid and vitamin B12 were lower than the RDA. Thiamine and niacin adequacy was higher than the RDA and that of fat was very high (237.10% vs 295.40%) compared to the RDA
