Perceptions and adaptation of the farmers to climate change

K.V. Vinayakumar, K.B. Umesh

Abstract

Agriculture in India and entire world is mostly dependent on the weather conditions. Impacts of climate change needs to be understood to work out strategies to mitigate its effect. The present study was undertaken in 2010-11 in Karnataka state, India. It uses both secondary and farm level data. Analysis showed that, there were changes in climate parameters like precipitation and temperature affecting farming activities to a greater extent. The cost of production has increased, crop yields have decreased, income from agriculture has decreased, diversification in farmer’s livelihood has started and consumption pattern is changing. Lack of information regarding long-term climate change and knowledge on appropriate adaptation measures were the major constraints for farmers. In the light of this, there is a need to improve the information dissemination system which provides early warnings on climatic parameters along with suitable adaptation measures
