Economic analysis of vegetable seedling production under Hi-tech and field condition

Abstract


Horticulture sector is fast emerging as the most remunerative sector for changing the age old subsistence farming specially in the rain fed dry lands, hills, arid and coastal agro-ecosystems. This paper analyses the economics of production of selected vegetable seedlings under poly house, shade net house and open field conditions.  The data were collected from the owners of the units for the period of 2014 and analyzed with appropriate tools.  In poly house and shade net house units, the sale of vegetable seedlings was done in trays, while in the open fields, it was bed system. Income generated through production of vegetable seedlings in poly house units of 2,000 square meter area was more, followed by shade net house units and open field units of the same area.  The results call for popularizing production of vegetables under poly house units.
