Clothing purchases among visually impaired adolescents

Abstract


People with severe sight loss are called ‘visually impaired’ and are characterized by irretrievable sight loss. The children with visually impairment face a number of problems while performing their daily activities; among those one of the major problems faced is purchasing practices of clothes. The present study was hence designed to study the purchasing practice and related problems of clothing visually impaired adolescents. Self structured schedules were used to interview 50 each visually impaired boys and girls. In general it was found that, majority of the visually impaired adolescents were always assisted by their parents, teachers, relatives and partially blind children while purchasing clothes. Visually impaired adolescent boys and girls ‘always’ purchased readymade and tailor-made garments respectively. The factors commonly considered while purchasing the garments among visually impaired adolescents were easy donning and doffing, textures (hand and feel) and price. Cent per cent of the visually impaired adolescents ‘always’ faced problem in selecting colour of the clothes followed by pattern, Lack of courage for shopping, and problem in quality assessment, were the other problems expressed by them. Thse problems can be minimized by designing adaptive clothing for  visually impaired adolescents.
