Symbolic adoption of home science technologies

Abstract


Home Science can be defined as education for home- life. The goal of home making is prosperous living anddrawing highest happiness, since home life influences the very foundation of an individual life. To make comfort in life style,needs to adopt suitable technologies. Scientists were discovered many technologies or modified existing technologies to suitthe needs/existing condition of rural area. However, fruits of technological development have not yet reached those whoneed them. Therefore the present research study entitled “Symbolic Adoption of Home Science Technologies” was taken upwith the objective to introduce selected home science technologies and to study the symbolic adoption pattern. This studywas conducted in four districts of Northern Karnataka during the year 2014-15 with 160 women respondents. During thestudy the intervention was carried out by introducing the selected technologies through different methods using teachingaids. After one week gap knowledge level and symbolic adoption of introduced technologies was collected using theschedule. In case of the technology on Milestone development and stimulating play materials it was observed that overallknowledge level index was increased by 33% and symbolic adoption level index by 31%. About nutrition knowledge levelindex, overall knowledge level increased to 21%. Similarly 22 % increased in adoption level index. In consumer education,overall knowledge level increased to 18% and in adoption level index it was increased to 43%. In case of Stain removal,overall knowledge level index increased by 18% and in overall adoption level it was increased to 45%. Considering allintroduced technologies, it was observed that knowledge and symbolic adoption found to be increased due to respondentswere convinced about the technologies which were useful in their day to day life. Respondents were also interested in theunderstanding of subject and took active part in the discussion. The printed matter (folders) related to technologies weresupplied to the respondents for further reference.
