Abstract

Although learning does not necessarily have to take place within four walls, the existence of a “bright andwelcoming” school classroom definitely has a strong and positive influence on the young minds and consequently on theirlearning levels. A value addition to this is to have learning spaces that facilitate interactive and experiential learning. Researchhas revealed the way in which children can learn, especially through ‘doing’, is strongly influenced by the nature, the designand the policies informing the use of teaching learning aids. With this background, a participatory research study was carriedout in selected government rural primary schools in four districts in Karnataka to understand the perceptions of students, parents and teachers if the existing primary schools in their village is comfortable, stimulating and encourages learning bydoing. The study revealed that in most schools sampled, classrooms were not perceived as comfortable, stimulating andexperiential. They do not have educative components or spaces that facilitate exploration or learning by doing. As an outcome, the researcher, along with the community derived eco-friendly, educative design concepts and ideas that could be developedwith local resources at a modest cost and incorporated into the classrooms to make it attractive and facilitate experientiallearning.
