Health hazards of women and men workers in building construction

Abstract


Construction industry is the key for the success of the globalization of Indian economy. Construction sector isproviding employment to 7 percent of total world employment. There are several policies adopted by Government of Indiafor the development of infrastructure for the country’s economic development. Construction is one of the important fieldemploying a large number of people as its workforce. The workers engaged in this field are victims of different occupationaldisorders and psychosocial stresses. The study was conducted at different building areas of Dharwad taluk of Dharwaddistrict. A total of 30 construction workers were selected (15 women and 15 men). Men and women performing in differentactivities in construction field were considered. Personal interview method was used to collect the required informationthrough pre- prepared questionnaire. Majority (40%) of the respondents in male category belongs to 35-40 years of agegroup and with respect to female category around 47% of them belongs to 20 to 35 years of age group.Eighty per cent ofthe male respondents have experienced accidents/injuries during the work period. More than 90 percent of female hadexperienced no proper sleep due to severe body pain. Female respondents(80%) have experienced severe stomach pain. Allthe respondents have suffered from whole body pain after work. About 13 percent female had miscarriage due to heavywork. Ninty three per cent of the male workers have suffered from leg pain. Eighty per cent of the male respondentssuffered from neck pain. The workers engaged in the construction field are the victims of different occupational disordersand psychosocial stresses. It can be observed that poor safety measures with high work load in the building construction inan unsafe working condition and female are facing more health hazards when compare to men workers. The activities doneby the respondents shows that without proper rest period leads to occupational risk.
