Dietary and lifestyle factors - A cause for kidney stones

Abstract


Among disorders of the urinary tract, kidney stones are a major cause of morbidity. Dietary and lifestyle factorsplay an important role in stone formation. A study was carried out with an objective to know the role of dietary and lifestylefactors in causation of kidney stones. About 100 kidney stone patients were selected from local hospitals. Information ondemographic profile, lifestyle factors, consumption of foods rich in oxalate, purine and salt were assessed by using foodfrequency questionnaire. Fluid consumption pattern was assessed by using standard cups. The results of the studyrevealed that, more males and younger people suffered from the disease. One third the subjects worked under direct sunlight(32%) and one fifth of them worked with hot machines (21%). Consumption of oxalate, purine and salt rich foods andscanty fluid intake (<2000 ml, 62%), vices viz., alcohol consumption (17%), smoking (19%), chewing betel nut, tobaccoand gutka (51%), sedentary lifestyle may have contributed to the risk of kidney stones.
