Empowering mothers with knowledge on use of stimulatory toys and play material for their infant's development - An intervention study

Abstract


A research study on empowering mothers with knowledge on use of stimulatory toys and play material for theirinfant’s development - An intervention study was conducted in five taluks of four districts of Karnataka state. Mothers of151 Infants of less than one year (selected with different 4 age cohorts) were interviewed to access the knowledge on useof age related toys using self structured schedule. Different kinds of toys used for their infants and purpose of use of thesetoys was assessed. The results of pre test revealed that, toys used for sensory stimulation were used more for ‘hearing’followed by ‘seeing’. Only 15 per cent of mothers used toys for infants up to 3months. Meager percentage of mothers (8%)knew about the toys which could be used for touch, taste and smell. Though they are using soft dolls and teethers they donot know the purpose of using it. Results with the kind of toys used showed that, 30 per cent of mothers used soundproducing toys (rattle and musical toys). None of the mothers had an idea of using concept toys. Only 15 to 20 percent ofthe mothers knew about the purpose of using toys as a stimulating material for developmental tasks especially in the laterage group. Post test results with intervention revealed that, developed package with different modules, found to be effectivein enhancing mother’s knowledge in using toys and play material for their infant’s development.
