Abstract

An experimental study on development of stimulatory toys and play material for sensitizing and optimizingcognitive development of infants was conducted in seven villages of five taluks of four districts of Karnataka state, with thepurpose to know the impact of the use of stimulatory toys and play material through the assessment of cognitivedevelopment of 151 infants with different age cohorts i.e., birth to 3 months (38), 3 to 6 months (46), 6 to 9 months (47)and 9 to 12 months (20). To assess the cognitive abilities of the infants, the age appropriate tasks were administered fromthe Bayley scale of infant development-I. At pretest, majority of the infants of all age cohorts are found to had averagemental development indices(MDI), ranging from 102.8 to 112.6 indices. Age related toys and play material were preparedwith ‘C’ programming. To conduct intervention, 100 infants were selected and grouped as experimental and eontrol groupsbased on the pre testing scores. To sensitize mothers of these infants, intervention was provided through developedmodules on use of stimulatary toys. Mothers of one part of experimental group were provided with age appropriatedeveloped stimulatory toys and play material kit to stimulate their child’s development. Interventional results revealedthat, Infants of experimental group -1 had more gain in MDI ( 9-13 points) compared to gain in experimental group -2(a gain of 8-9 points) due to the availability of play material kit and intervention. The interactionary effect was found to besignificant with test and group and with test and age. Production of quality toys and play material for children has to bepromoted in large scale and Institutions working with children, Local artisans, interested farmers and farm women throughSHG groups can collaborate and involve in the production of the toys based on their own designs and demand which can beturned out to be a great entrepreneur in an educational field.
