Relationship between mental health and social support among urban elderly

Abstract


India is an ageing society with the rate of growth of ageing population exceeding the growth of the generalpopulation. Social support consist of support in several forms of family, community, and other social institutions likereligion and the state. Family friends and relatives are the important source of support to aged people. The relationshipbetween social support and health has been recognized for many years, however how social support affects the mentalhealth remains controversial . Mental health problems are more in old age period. Social support mediates the impact of thebuilt environment on elderly resident. Some of the evidence is emerging that perceived social support may also havebeneficial effect on cognitive functioning (Seaman et al., 2011). In the context of the importance of the subject the presentstudy has been under taken to explore the relationship between social support and mental health of urban elderly. Therandom sample consist of 40 male and 40 female elderly were randomly selected from Dharwad city of different areas inKarnataka state. The study emphasized to know the status of mental health and social support of elderly. Social supportquestionnaire developed by Heitzmann and Kaplan (1988) and mental health inventory by Jagdish and Srivastav (1983)were used to analyse the social support and mental health status. Results revealed that 28.80% of elderly received supportfrom 3 numbers of members followed by 4 and 5 number of members. Urban female elderly were better in mental healthcompared to male elderly. With respect to urban elderly there was a significant difference between male and female elderlyon social support. There was a significant relationship between social support and mental health of urban elderly.
