Influence of music training on self concept of school children

Abstract


Children with music training are known to develop higher levels of social cohesion and understanding ofthemselves and others. Music training can lead to a sense of achievement; an increase in self esteem; increased confidence;persistence in overcoming frustrations when learning is difficult; self-discipline; and provide a means of self-expression.Oneof the cumulative benefits of music training is building a strong self concept. Self concept is the self image of a person meanstowhat extent a person knows about him/her self. The present study was undertaken to understand the influence of musictraining on self concept of school children.The sample comprised of one hundred and thirty school children who receivedmusic training along with their schooling (music training group)and one hundred and thirty school children who did notreceiveany music training along with their schooling (academic study group)in the age range of 14-16 years. Self structuredtools were used to elicit data on music training and self concept. The data collected was organized, tabulated and analyzedusing appropriate statistical methods. The results of the research revealed that, about seventy-nine percent of the respondentswho had music training along with schooling felt that they were confident about themselves. Majority of the respondentsfrom academic study group and music training group were confident about them and considered failure as a stepping stone.An equal percentage (79%) of the academic and fifty percent of the music training group respondents reported that theyunderstood that the path to higher achievement is paved with many obstacles. It can be concluded that, the results indicateda positive association between music training and self-concept in school children. However, the true nature of the associationbetween music training and self concept can be clarified only by future longitudinal research.
