SUNANDA K. ITAGI

Abstract

The study was conducted on 130 farm families during 2014 which included five villages of Dharwad taluka. Thedemographic information was collected on 65 dual and 65 single parent farm families by self structured questionnaire andsocio- economic status scale by Agrawal et.al, (2005). The PGI Health Questionnaire developed by Wig and Verma, (1978)used to assess health status and parental stress levels were identified by Parenting Stress Index (Abidin, 1995). The parentsexhibiting high level of parenting stress were selected for intervention programme. The Stress Index Questionnaire byIvancevich and Matteson (1980) was used to assess the stress level of the parents before and after intervention programme.According to Socio-economic status 48.46% and 47.69% of farm families belonged to lower middle and poor class respectivelywhile 1.53% belonged to very poor class. One third of the dual and single parent families possessed 3-4 children and few(2%) possessed bigger family structure with 5 and more children. The results revealed that 41% of parents exhibitedneurotic symptoms while 50% showed mild symptoms connected to health and only 9% found healthy and withoutsymptoms. The mothers of both single and dual parent families indicated more neurotic symptoms than fathers. Thisindicated that more perceived health problems were observed in mothers than fathers in farm families. Most of therespondents (77%) showed high and clinically significant of parenting stress followed by 21% of the respondents belongedto normal stress category. It was interesting to note that more number of young parents experienced high and clinicallysignificant parenting stress. Among single and dual parent families positive and highly significant correlation was observedbetween health status and parenting stress of the mothers. It indicated that increase in health problems or psychologicaldistress increased parenting stress. The pre and post intervention programme results indicated considerable reduction instress of the parents.
