Influence of parenting on socio-emotional development of rural infants of Northern Karnataka

Abstract


Influence of parenting on socio – emotional development of rural Infants of Northern Karnataka studied on asample of 192 infants revealed that there was positive and significant correlation (r= .193**) between parenting and socialemotionaldevelopment of infants indicating that as the scores on parenting increased the scores on socio-emotionaldevelopment of infants also increased. Positive parenting one dimension of parenting was positively and significantlycorrelated (r=.176*) while negative parenting, another dimension of the parenting was negatively but non-significantlycorrelated (r= -.109) with socio-emotional development of infants. Majority (63.5%) of the mothers of infants was inaverage parenting and 16 percent were with poor parenting. Majority (65%) of the infants had average socio-emotionaldevelopment indices while 26 percent of them had high level and nine percent of them had low level of socio-emotionaldevelopment. Infants were drawn equally from the three age cohorts: 6-12 months, 13-18 months, and 19-24 months. Thesamples were selected from the three districts of the Northern Karnataka and from each of the three districts, two talukswere randomly selected and from each selected taluk, two villages were randomly selected. Parenting was assessed by usingparenting observation tool developed by Smith.et.al (2012) where ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ parenting was considered as twoseparate dimensions as well as parenting. For assessing socio- emotional development of infants, the socio- emotionaldevelopment sub scale of Bayley scale of Infants and Toddler Development – III (2006) was used. A Pearson productmoment correlation analysis was used to know the relationship between parenting and socio- emotional development ofInfants.
