Influence of socio-economic factors on socio-emotional development of rural infants of Northern Karnataka

Abstract


Influence of socio-economic factors on socio-emotional development of rural infants of Northern Karnataka wasstudied on a sample of 192 infants of age 6-24 months drawn equally from three age cohorts; 6-12 months, 13-18 months,and 19-24 months. The sample was drawn from three districts of Northern Karnataka where in from each district, twotaluks and from each selected taluk two villages were randomly selected. Socio-emotional development was assessed usingSocial / Emotional sub-scale of Bayley Scale of Infant and Toddler Development (BSID-III, 2006) and socio-economicstatus was assessed by using a standard measures. Chi square test and Pearson product moment correlation coefficient wasemployed to know the association / relation between socio-economic status and socio-emotional development of infants.Majority of the families (75%) belonged to lower middle, 15 percent were in poor middle and 11 percent in upper middlelevel of socio-economic status. On Socio-emotional development, majority (65%) of the infants were in average categorywhile 26 percent had high level and 9 percent of them were in low level. The co-relational analysis(r=0.106) revealed thatthere was no significant association / relation of socio emotional status with Socio-emotional development of infants. Asmost of the infants were in average (65%) and low level ( 9%) of socio emotional development there is an imperative needfor programmes for parents to optimise socio-emotional development in infants.
