Dyeing of cotton fabric with Acacia arabica bark

ANJALI SRIVASTAVA, ELA DEDHIA

Abstract

Kutch is one of the block printing and dyeing centres in India where artisans are still practicing legacy of naturaldyes. Their dye extraction and dyeing process are not standardized. They use hazardous chemicals in their dyeing process. In this research work, a natural dye source Acacia arabica bark has been collected from Kutch where it is found in abundanceand tried to standardise its extraction and dyeing conditions for cotton fabric. Testing of fastness properties were carried outsubsequently. Physical properties of dyed samples were compared with undyed fabric. Dye from Acacia arabica bark wasextracted in aqueous and organic solvent to check the appropriate solvent for dye extraction. Pre-mordanting method wasused for dyeing using eco-friendly mordants. To standardize dyeing conditions of cotton fabric with the dye extract, variedconditions of pH, temperature and time period were used. The dye produced reddish-brown colour on cotton fabric.Standard conditions of dyeing were found as slightly acidic pH, at 800C for one hour time period. The dyed samplesshowed excellent rubbing, washing, perspiration and moderate light fastness. Comparison of physical properties withundyed fabric showed increased absorbency and tensile strength.
