Abstract

Technical textiles are one of the fastest growing sectors in textile applications that are designed to performspecific functions. They represent a multi-disciplinary field with numerous end use applications. Among all the technicaltextiles, medical textiles are gaining demand among the consumers especially in health and hygiene applications. Advancedmedical textiles are significantly developing area because of their major expansion in fields like wound healing and controlledrelease of drugs, bandaging and pressure garments, implantable devices as well as medical devices and development of newintelligent textiles products. A survey was conducted in ten multi-speciality hospitals of Hubli-Dharwad city to elicit theinformation on use of textile materials in different wards i.e. general ward, special ward, neonatal section, intensive care unitand operation theatre as well their care and maintenance practices. The information was collected from the hospital staffthrough personal interview method using a self-structured questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed using frequencyand percentages. The results revealed that majority of the hospitals used medium weight cotton fabric in all the wardsbecause of its comfort, user-friendly, high moisture absorption capacity and easy to maintain. White colour fabric wasutilized in hospitals because of its ease of stain/ soil identification. Moreover, whites can be readily bleached that not onlyremoves unwanted stains but also disinfects the fabric. Laundering is always outsourced. Single use disposables andnonwovens especially for the wards are less popular and less preferred because of its high cost and disposal problem thatcreate environment pollution. However, majority of the staff in the hospitals are unaware about the availability of suchsingle use disposables, nonwovens and special finished fabrics. Therefore, there is a need to develop cost-effective andreusable medicated textiles for health and sanitational benefits especially in hospitals and household.
