Preference for garment styles by college girls

Abstract


Clothing is an integral inseparable part of mankind that meets the basic necessity along with food and shelter andeven denotes wealth, power, position and mode of adornment. Clothing has become a preferred means of individualexpression and economic concerns. The personal, social, economical and cultural factors do influence one’s clothing behaviour.Today’s dynamic market is flooded with immense varieties and a design of garments for college girls where making anintelligent selection becomes a complex process. It is evident that college girls have their own ideas about what they wantto wear and so have more influence on what eventually ends up hanging in their closets. Keeping this in view the study wasconducted to know the preference for styles and garment patterns by college girls in Hubli-Dharwad corporation area. Thesurvey was conducted by personal interview method to elicit information on styles of necklines, collars, sleeve and sleevelengths, skirts silhouettes, hem length, fasteners and surface ornamentation by using self structured questionnaire administeredon 120 college girls. The college girls always preferred shirt collars followed by shawl collars sometimes peter pan and neverroll collars and stand collars. Circular, flared, A-line and balloon were the silhouettes most preferred for skirts. Greater percent of respondents always preferred printed tops followed by machine embroidered with moderate amount of decoration.
