Consumers' penchant for khadi outfits with trendy detachable garment components

Abstract


Embellishments and trimmings have come a long way to form an integral part of textile to enrich the fabrics andgarments giving them an elegant look. Several varieties of decorative are in vogue, which ultimately attracts consumer’sattention. But, when focused to individual’s choice, there will be variation in the likes and dislikes that is ruled according toone’s own desire to look decent or fancy. In the present study, a survey was conducted in Dharwad city of Karnataka statewith a total sample size of 300 respondents, which consisted of each 120 adolescent boys and girls between the age groupof 16-22 years who were on roll in the local colleges. The sample also consisted of 60 home scientists comprised of staffmembers and post graduate students of College of Rural Home Science, UAS, Dharwad by administering a self structuredschedule. The survey revealed that on the whole the collective opinion of Home Scientists, Adolescent boys and girlsindicated that majority of the total respondents desired to have surface embellishment on ladies kurta followed by ladiestop, gents kurta and gents shirt. Further consumers’ showed penchant towards Hand embroidery followed by Machineembroidery and Zardosi work for ladies attire. Whereas, Machine embroidery was preferred for gents attire both gents shirtan kurta followed by Hand embroidery, Show buttons and Glass work. Study reveals that embellishments are highlypreferred on ladies wear compared to gents as ladies are more conscious about beauty and appearance and tend to getattracted by colour and design. Hence, Naturally Coloured Cotton (NCC) Stripe and Checks fabrics were further taken fordesigning and construction of three garments with a concept of detachable components - necklines and lower panel for ladiestop; cuff, collar and buttonstand for gent’s shirt and collar and buttonstand for gent’s kurta.
