In vitro screening for salinity stress in cotton genotypes

SAGAR YADAV, AND H. M. VAMADEVAIAH

Abstract

Effect of salinity stress on growth parameters in 27 cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) genotypes were studied underin vitro condition. The salinity stress was induced by incorporating NaCl to generate EC 12 ds/m. Reduction in seedlingsfresh weight, shoot length, root weight, root length and root dry weight was significantly less in JK-4 (G11), PH 1009 (G12)and RDT-17 (G10) under salt stress as compared to other genotypes while, high per cent reduction in all the traits wereobserved in CPD 464 (G4), CPD 2007-4 (G5) and HLS 321729 (G18). Based on the results obtained, we conclude thatJK-4 (G11), PH 1009 (G12) and RDT-17 (G10) were more tolerant to salinity stress.
