Assessment of fuel-wood requirement, sources and usage of fuel wood in different watershed of Sirsi taluk in Uttara Kannada district

Abstract


The study was conducted in Sirsi taluk, Uttar Kannada district,Karnataka, in two watersheds (5B1A5 and 4D4F5) to assess therequirement of fuel-wood in the villages of the watersheds, sourcesand purpose of use of fuel-wood. The data was collected by personnelinterview method. Five villages in each of the watersheds were selectedand were surveyed to about 10% of the total households of the villagewhich included the equal proportion of the households with thedifferent family sizes i.e. small, medium and large families. The resultsindicate that the demand for fuel-wood from the selected villages wasfound to be higher in watershed 1 i.e. 5B1A5 (18342.1 tonnes/year)than watershed 2 i.e., 4D4F5 (1037.2 tonnes/year). The averageper-capita fuel-wood consumption was also higher in watershed1 (5.23 quintals/year) than watershed 2 (3.86 quintals/year). Thehighest percentage of households collecting fuel-wood from forestwas found to be in watershed 2 (77.7%) than watershed 1 (67.5%).The second most preferred source was bettaland in watershed 1(43.2%) and agriculture land in watershed 2 (9.94%). In bothwatershed 1 and watershed 2, heating water for bathing was the majorpurpose in most of the households of the villages (93.1% and 95.4%respectively), followed by cooking (95.14% and 60.4%, respectively)and areca processing (47.1% and 11.5%, respectively
