Abstract

A study was conducted to estimate the magnitude of heterosis forgrowth components. Twenty F1 hybrids produced in all possiblecombination by using five parents. These F1s along with five parentsand a check (Arka Ananda) were evaluated in a randomized block designwith three replication at the College of Horticulture, Mudigere during2017-18. Appreciable heterosis was found over mid, better and checkfor all the traits studied. None of the hybrids recorded significant andpositive heterosis over standard check for plant height. However, crossKudchi×Melavnki (22.09%) and Kudchi×Malapur (20.66%) recordedsignificant and positive heterosis over better parent for plant height. For number of secondary branches cross Kudchi×Mattigulla (20.83%)and number of flowers per plant. The cross Melavanki×Mattigulla(57.45%) recorded significant and positive heterosis over standard check. The present study reveals good scope for isolation of pure lines fromthe progenies of best heterotic hybrids as well as commercial exploitationof heterosis in brinjal.
