Morphological characterization of wild orchids of Western Ghats

Abstract
A pot culture experiment was conducted to study the morphologicalcharacterization of wild orchids of Western Ghats in the Orchidariumof the Department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, Collegeof Horticulture, Mudigere, during 2017-18.The present study dealswith 14 wild species of orchids from the Western Ghats viz.,Bulbophyllum fimbriatum, Coelogyne breviscapa, Coelogynefimbriata, Coelogyne nervosa, Cottonia pendicularis, Dendrobiumbarbatalum, Dendrobium herbaceum, Dendrobium nutantiflora,Luisia zeylanicum, Oberonia brunoniana, Pholiodata imbricata,Spathoglottis plicata, Trias stocksii and Vanda thwaitesii. Vegetativecharacters revealed sizeable variations among the species which canbe differentiated from one another. The results revealed thatSpathoglottis plicata showed maximum shoot height (120 cm), leaflength (103 cm), leaf breadth (18.33 cm) whereas more number ofleaves was found in Dendrobium herbaceum (24) and highest leafratio was obtained in Luisia zeylanicum (40.87).
