Cultural, morphological and pathogenic variability in Bipolaris sorokiniana (Sacc.) Shoem. - Incitant of spot blotch of wheat

R. ASHWINI, P. V. PATIL

Abstract

Wheat leaves showing typical symptoms of spot blotch were collected during the survey of rabi 2017-18; alsospot blotch infected leaf samples received from Agricultural Research Station, Niphad (Maharashtra) and Hole farm,Baramati (Pune). Pathogen was isolated from these samples, the cultural and morphological characters of the 14 isolates ofBipolaris sorokiniana (Sacc.) Shoem. were studied on potato dextrose agar medium. Variation were evident in the colonycolour that ranged from whitish black to black; margin varied from irregular to regular; mycelial growth from flat to raised.Growth rate also varied with slow to excellent sporulation. In all the isolates, the shape of the conidia was oblong, roundedat base and apex, light brown to dark brown in colour, three to seven septate and four to eight celled. However, the size ofthe conidia among the isolates varied, some of them were very long and narrow, while some were fairly broad. On the basisof aggressiveness/virulence of the 14 isolates on nine wheat cultivars which showed varied response to the pathogen, theisolates of B. sorokiniana were classified into two groups as virulent that comprised eight isolates viz., Bsj, Bsg, Bsm1,Bsm2, Bsu, Bsa, Bsdbl1 and Bsdbl2, less virulent that consisted of the remaining six isolates viz., Bsd1, Bsd2, Bsb, Bsn, Bsp1and Bsp2.
