Sanitation and water management practices by Siddhi tribes

Abstract


India has 54 million tribal populations which constitute 7.8 per cent of the country’s population (Anon., 1991).There are 427 tribes sub divided into groups, spread over the length and breadth of the country, concentrate in mostly hillyand forest region. In tribal population Siddhi tribes are one of the tribe groups. Siddhi in the state are small, homogenous,typical and isolated human group. According to Bombay gazetteer the Siddhis escaped from Goa from their masters andsettled in Yellapur taluka of Uttar Kannada district. They are described as having a black skin, curly hair, sloping foreheadand thick lips. Management of resources by local community is the way to lead their life in their own life style. They savethe environment by conserving water, plants, forest, land resources by utilizing them in proper manner but these Siddhitribes are economically backward people. Explorative research design and purposive random sampling technique was usedfor data collection. Study area was Utta Kannada district and 120 Siddhi tribe households were selected as sample size. Theinterview schedule was formulated to elicit the information from the selected sample. For sustainable utilization and longterm conservation of resources in these areas the government should assist communities in the management of theirsanitation and water resources. Hence, it is necessary to conduct such surveys in different parts of the country and developa strategy to improve the periodontal status of the population as a whole. Such surveys do help the government to takenecessary steps to improvise the health and living status of such tribe.
